Higashi West was mentioned previously and I'd like to second the
recommendation. Really very good and they know how to charge for it also.
Limited selection of jizake, but they do have a couple. The quality of
the fish and the presentation are both excellent. Minor gripes; won't
seat a large group (over 8, 10?), they usually have only 4 or 5 types of
sushi available on any given night. Dunno if it can really be classified
as a sushi place...
Sushi Sam's aka Edo Mata sure has captured a segment of the market! They
are _always_ busy. Very reasonable prices. Fast service. The quality of
the fish and the presentation is far the worst you'll find in San Mateo,
in fact it is good, but no more. We find all their sauces way too sweet.
Unagi sauce, teriyaki, goma-ae horenso, etc. Agemono such as kara-age,
korokke, shrimp heads (from the amaebi) are often greasy. But heck, a lot
of sushi places in the area don't attempt the "bar food" you often get in
Japan at sushi bars. When we want Japanese food and some sushi we go to
Kaimuki on El Camino in SM. Can't beat it with a stick!
If you want unpretensious, cheap, family-style cooking in SM try Suzu-you
on 2nd. Set dinners, no or little sushi.
A plague on terrible, fake sushi/Japanese restaurants like Okayama and
Bonsai in RWC, Azuma/Ozuma in San Carlos, the boat place on Castro in MV,
Miyake in PA. etc. Still haven't made up my mind about the new place
(Natori, Satori?) in MP.
If anyone is interested :-), I'll disclose my fav Peninsula sushi.
