Ok, having now eaten at Shogun 4 times in the past two weeks, I've sampled
quite a few of their rolls.
Overall, I've found things to be fantastic.
Sung-Ho does a great job, and the cuts of fish are not only tasty, but I
think some of the largest I've seen. For example, the ngiri has a roll of
rice approx. 3/4" in diameter, about 2-2.5" long, and the fish drapes
across that, hanging down about an inch on either end. These are 2-3 bite
ngiri.
The Shogun Special rolls (#1 and 2) are very tasty combinations, with 2-3
kinds of fish, some nuts and veggies. The Spider Roll and California Roll
(both favorites of mine) were ample and delicious. And I was very pleased
with the Octo Roll. It had octopus and avacodo, and the octopus was cut up
in small-ish pieces, so you didn't have an overly chewy experience.
Business has been brisk (and picking up) each time I've been in there,
which worked against us last night, since we were in a bit of a rush to get
to a movie. But we still made it on time. (I just didn't get to sit and
enjoy things as much as I would have liked to.)
They're open Mon-Sat, and at least on weekedays, the schedule seems to be
lunch from about 11:30 or 12:00 until 2:30, then open again for dinner from
about 5:30-10pm
If you're in the neighborhood, stop in. (1123 Pacific Ave., Santa Cruz, CA)
And tell 'em you saw it here. (They had heard about the list from someone
(not me), and mentioned it while I was in there. :-) )
If you're planning on being in the area, post a note here, and maybe we can
arrange a group outing.
