Hi, all.
This list has been a bit dead, of late, and I wanted to forward a
note a friend posted on another list, as he had some informative reviews.
Feel free to post stuff like this here, that's what the list is
for. :-)

Anyone up for a south-bay get-together? Either San Jose or Santa
Cruz areas? (And recommendations for San Jose? I'm not as familiar with the
places over there. Just know a couple of them.)

Pat

Masa's is perfectly fine, however, I would like to suggest
either Fuki Sushi, Yakko, or Yoshidas.
Fuki Sushi is the only place in the SF area where I have found
a Kobé beef analog ( the beef is raised in the states ). There are
undoubtedly more restaurants that serve this ( known to the
cognocenti, not me ), but this is the one where I take guests. They
also have more varieties of fish than you can shake a fin at. The
tataki varieties include beef and tuna ( Kobé beef tataki is great, no
strike that, exquisite ); there may be more varieties, I don't know.
They are a little expensive, however.
Yakko also has a great variety, and somewhat less expensive.
They also do beef, and tuna, tataki, which I think is a great way to
eat meat ( as you might be able to tell ).
Yoshidas is new, but is run by the same people who run the two
Masaki restaurants ( Masaki in Cupertino is good, fun and loud. They
also have the little boats if that is what winds you up.) Yoshidas
offers sukiyaki as a cook-it-yourself at a special bar, and has at
least one waitress who prefers a kimono, instead of the more usual
shirt and trousers.
The thing I find appealing by all three ( four ) of these
places, is that they are all run by Japanese and are frequented by
Japanese, as opposed to many places run by Taiwanese, Fuchiense or
Cantonese. This is certainly not to put down Chinese, but I think
that more Japanese chefs and waitresses do Japanese food and service
better.
