Meant to post a quick note about this place. I had been wanting to go for
months, and finally made it there about 3 weeks ago. It's on the corner of
Ocean and Soquel in Santa Cruz.
If you're coming south on 17, it dumps onto Ocean. You follow it down about
.75 mile (roughly, I'm guessing) and it will be on the right. It's right where
"Rock'n Tacos" used to be, and is across the street from a 76 gas station.
Little Tokyo is has a "sushi boat" style bar, as well as table seating. Most
of the customers were sitting at the bar, and it's actually quite large with 2
different prep areas and the water-flow can be sectioned off for a smaller
crowd. When we arrived, it was early and not crowded, but by the time we left
the first area was full and I suspect they were about to open the whole thing.
The cuts were generous, and tasty, and prices seemed reasonable (for sushi,
anyway.) On average, they seemed to be in the $3-5 range per little tray, but
there were a few that went down to $2 or $2.5, and a few fancy ones that went
up to about $6. The atmosphere was nice, the service friendly.
I know that some people don't like sushi-boat style restaurants, but I
actually kind of like them. (Perhaps why people do/don't like 'em would be a
good discussion topic.) I think I like 'em because I don't have to make a
whole bunch of decisions up front. I can munch, and if something floats by
that looks tasty, I can try it. (Sometimes nice as I don't always think to
order something or don't know what it's called, but it looks great.) I can
also eat until I'm full, without having to worry about having ordered too much
or too little.
Anyway, it was a pleasant experience, and I'm sure I'll eat there again
sometime in the not-too-distant.
Any other reviews from recent excursions?
