"Hypercar" is a term invented (and trademarked) by Amory Lovins at the Rocky Mountain Institute (http://www.rmi.org). It describes a new breed of automobile being designed for maximum efficiency. Details and pictures of the concept cars that have been designed to date can be seen at http://www.hypercar.com.
The hypercar design uses several efficiency optimizations at once. It is made of lightweight composite materials, reducing curb weight and thus fuel consumption. It uses a hybrid-electric drive train, or fuel cells. It has very low rolling resistance and a low drag coefficient. It uses regenerative braking.
Current hypercar designs have a fuel efficiency of 99 miles per gallon, and theoretical maximum efficiency is over 200 miles per gallon.
