Living Machines and Ocean Arks
Living Machines use biology and natural systems to effectively treat pollution. These techniques are called "bioremediation".
[Living Machines, Inc.] is a company that has designed and built large installations that use plants and microbes to treat raw sewage, toxic
waste, polluted waterways, lakes and ponds, etc. There are many books and
several articles about them, and it's fairly surprising to read how successful these systems can be in comparion with our traditional mechanical and chemical treatments of water. (One example: Living Machines can often produce drinking water out of raw sewage that is up to 5 times cleaner than municipal standards require for water that comes out of your tap!)
Their sister organization, [Ocean Arks International] is working to develop large floating "restorers" which can float on the open oceans as well as other waterways and clean up pollution.
Ocean Arks has a fantastic list of books, articles, and other resources at:
- (We might want to transcribe some or most of that into the Wiki using the ISBN links, and let them know about it. Then people can click to get more info or order the books. See WholeFuture/EcoCities for examples.)
- (02-13-03 - They have updated the list themselves, and now many books link to Amazon. ISBN linkes within the Wiki may still be more robust, since they link out to 3 different sources for better price-shopping and link durability, but for now, their list is quite impressive and it may make sense not to duplicate effort. --PatrickSalsbury)
- The [clean-water mailing list] focuses on issues surrounding how to supply safe, reliable supplies of clean water to the people of earth.
