WARNING WARNING: Completely tangential anecdote:

Researchers have determined that the factor which limits algae growth in the
world's oceans is the concentration of IRON. This was front page news about
two months ago... A bunch of marine biologists dumped about 2 tons of iron
dust into a large patch of the Pacific Ocean, with the result that the ocean
turned totally green with blue-green algae... The [in]famous quote from the
researcher that started all of this a few years ago was, I believe, "Give me
a tanker full of iron and I'll give you an ice age." The ocean's algae
population is primarily responsible for converting CO2 to O2, which counters
the "greenhouse effect."
