There are no real obstacles to building a structure this large, anymore.
A
mile is 5280 feet...a half mile is appx 2600 feet. Temcor has managed to
engineer a dome system for domes up to 1500-2000 feet in diameter,
and Monolithic Domes has engineered a sprayed system called a
"Crenosphere" which specifically deals with domes almost this large.

We're almost there!!!

Take a look at the animations and stills from the first milennial
project,
and you sould see something similar. In fact, they have spherical
airships docking at their seacrete island in one of their animations.
